Curriculum Vitae
Dr Alexander Mustard has always been passionate about the ocean. From a
early age Alexander, his friends and his family knew his life would be
linked with marine life. At 9 years old, he took his first photographs
underwater. From the age of 10 he kept and bred many species of freshwater
tropical fish. And by the time he was 11 his fascination with the ocean was
so all consuming that he decided then and there to work towards going to
University and achieving a PhD in marine biology.
At 13 he was awarded the Roxburgh Scholarship to Stowe School, near
Buckingham (UK), and at 18 went to Southampton University where he first
completed a BSc (Hons) in Oceanography with Marine Biology, and where he was
invited to stay on in the then newly built Southampton Oceanography Centre
(SOC) to undertake his PhD. Alexander completed his PhD when he was 25 and
still works as a Post-Doctoral Scientist at the SOC; which is Europe's
largest centre for research and education in marine sciences.Since finishing
his PhD in 2001, he has competed several oceanographic research cruises,
published many articles and has received the Norman Heaps Prize (2002) from
the Challenger Society for Marine Science as one of the most promising
young marine scientists in the UK.
